To Learn Flamenco Is To Live Flamenco
Here Spain there is a very insightful saying about learning flamenco, which is; “hay que mamarlo”. That phrase basically translates to ‘you have to suckle it’, as in, you have to feed from flamenco as babies feed from their mothers. This is because if you really want to learn it properly you have to live it.
But what does it mean to live flamenco? Well the answer is far less esoteric than the question. It simply means that you need to listen to and play a lot of flamenco. So whenever you have the opportunity you should do it. This also includes doing palmas whenever you can, practicing compás on any table you see, and playing with other flamenco players as much as you can.
When you live in Spain this is rather easy to do, as there are many people to play with and is very easy to listen to flamenco, especially when it comes to live shows or street performances. However, when you live in other countries this can prove to be much more difficult. However, this does not mean that you should not try to play and listen to flamenco as much as you can.
